Gossamer – Passion Pit

View More By Passion Pit

Our Review

What started when Michael Angelakos self-recorded a Valentine’s Day EP as a gift for his girlfriend has now evolved into a Boston-based quintet with a thoroughly amazing sophomore album. “Take a Walk” picks up where Passion Pit's praised 2009 debut, Manners, left off. But there’s an almost urgent confidence pushing these melodies into anthemic exuberance, as Angelakos sings about building a fortress of love around his family while the economy comes crashing down over them. “I'll Be Alright” finds Passion Pit at its most experimental, with hyper-edited cut-up arrangements tangling up and then unraveling to reveal an uplifting electro-pop standout. “Cry Like a Ghost” blends Kanye West–flavored R&B production with a twee-based ballad that’s more reflective of Brooklyn than Boston. But it’s when Angelakos and company deviate from such hipster trappings that the real gems surface. “Constant Conversations” works in heady arrangements and backing vocals that ooze a smoldering groove above its complexities, while “Where We Belong” fuses a Radiohead-esque darkened sparseness with pitter-patter beats and Angelakos’ most soulful singing yet.

Passion Pit and their Sophomore Skyrocket (5 stars)
I have listened to the NPR stream of this album countless times. Having been a ticket holder of one of the recently cancelled shows, I have also been very on top of all the recent articles (most note-ably from Pitchfork.com) and with knowing all that has gone into this album, I'm impressed even more than I was from my initial listen. Angelakos is a textbook troubled genius. His melancholic whizzes and bops with these very deep and personal a

Gossamer indeed. (2 stars)
I was disappointed with this album. When Take a Walk debuted as Gossamer's single, I was excited. But upon first listen, I feel let down. The tracks are all kind of similar- sheer washes of tinkly sound swirled with Angelakos' signature falsetto, which actually starts to grind on my ears a bit after the one-note procession of songs. Lots of shimmery synth-pop can be found here, but don't expect any more of the hard-hitting beats or beautiful

The Boston, Massachusetts-based Passion Pit began as a one-man project of singer and songwriter Michael Angelakos to produce a Valentine's Day gift for his girlfriend. The gift, an EP entitled Chunk of Change, soon wound up in the hands of friends and acquaintances, who were enthralled with the work. Eventually, Passion Pit became not only a vehicle for the romantic expressions of Angelakos' heart but a full-fledged band — at least for live gigs — and opened for a number of well-known...
